Digital Earth in a Changed World: Challenges and Opportunities

«What we will be able to do in 2005 will look primitive compared to the Digital Earth of the year 2020″

Al Gore, 1998

The founding father of Digital Earth, former U.S. Vice President Al Gore in his keynote speech 22 years ago anticipated and highlighted two particularly significant years in the future development of Digital Earth: 2005 and 2020. The year 2005 went down in history with the launch of Google Earth. But the Digital Earth of 2020 must far exceed that milestone.

2020 clearly demonstrated the fragility of the modern world and its exceptional vulnerability. One of the most serious, though not the only, threats to civilisation is the threat of the spread of new infections. The challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic have radically changed the lives of all humanity and affected the plans for the important annual ISDE event, the 8th Digital Earth Summit. The summit will be held on November, 30 — December, 02, 2020 online at DESummit2020.org. There is every reason to believe that threats and challenges of 2020 will lead to a better understanding of both the meaning of the Digital Earth and its role in ensuring sustainable development and security on a global scale. The slogan of the Summit will be «Digital Earth in a Changed World: Challenges and Opportunities».

The following topics are proposed for discussion at the summit:

We also invite future Summit participants to suggest other topics for discussion.

8th Digital Earth Summit will be organised by ISDE and its Russian Chapter, NeoGeography Group/Technopark Protvino (Russia) and Paris Lodron University of Salzburg (Austria).
